Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs)

Cut carbon, build credibility, and power the clean energy transition.

At a glance

As the race to decarbonise gathers momentum, businesses are seeking smarter, simpler ways to reduce emissions linked to energy supply. One of the most effective? A switch to renewable energy. With supply backed by Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), your usage becomes fully traceable, supporting credible climate action and aligning seamlessly with your sustainability goals.

What RECs can do for your business

Help tackle carbon emissions

RECs enable you to match your energy use with verified renewable sources, offering a measurable way to take credible climate action and reduce your overall operational emissions in line with recognised sustainability standards.

    Enhance your sustainability profile

Using RECs demonstrates a verified commitment to clean energy sourcing. This transparency builds trust with customers, investors, and regulators, enhancing your reputation as a responsible, future-focused organisation.

      Support the shift to renewables

Purchasing RECs sends a clear signal of demand for renewable electricity and gas. This market support drives further investment in green infrastructure, making clean energy more competitive and accelerating the shift away from fossil fuels across the energy system.

        Our Renewable Energy Certificate solutions

Brook Green Supply offers tailored Renewable Energy Certificates – including both Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (for electricity) and Renewable Gas Guarantees of Origin (for gas) –
to help you meet your unique sustainability goals. Whether you're looking to back your current supply or secure certificates for future compliance periods, we offer the flexibility to procure RECs alongside or independently of your energy contract.

Are Renewable Energy Certificates right for me?

RECs are ideal for organisations seeking verified renewable energy, flexibility, and a straightforward way to support sustainability goals.
        Consider RECs if:

        1.

You want verified renewable energy to meet sustainability goals

        2.

Your energy consumption varies or doesn’t justify a long-term PPA

        3.

You prefer flexibility over fixed, long-term contracts

        What RECs do we supply?

Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGOs)

When your supply is backed by REGO certificates, you can be confident your electricity comes from renewable sources. For every megawatt hour (MWh) generated from renewables in the UK, Ofgem issues a REGO certificate – and we hold these certificates to authenticate your supply as genuinely renewable and fully verifiable.

Renewable Gas Guarantees of Origin (RGGOs)

When your gas supply is backed by RGGO certificates, your consumption is matched with renewable gas – most commonly biomethane produced by anaerobic digestion of organic materials. For every kilowatt-hour (kWh) of renewable gas injected into the grid, the Green Gas Certification Scheme (GCCS) issues an RGGO certificate, which we hold to verify the renewable origin of your supply.

        FAQs

With effective management, REGOs make renewable electricity traceable, simple and aligned with your sustainability goals – meaning they’re ideal for businesses looking to demonstrate credible green credentials, streamline compliance, and drive meaningful progress towards decarbonisation.

REGOs (Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin) are used to evidence the purchase of renewable electricity. When used correctly in reporting (e.g. under the market-based method in the GHG Protocol), they help reduce your Scope 2 emissions (indirect emissions from purchased electricity).

RGGOs (Renewable Gas Guarantees of Origin) are used to prove the purchase of renewable gas (like biomethane). These can help reduce your Scope 1 emissions (direct emissions from fuel use).

It’s worth noting that while these certificates help with emissions reporting, they don’t directly reduce physical emissions unless paired with broader decarbonisation efforts.

REGOs and RGGOs certify that your electricity or gas comes from renewable sources, helping reduce your reported Scope 2 or Scope 1 emissions. They’re about choosing low-carbon energy at the source.

Carbon offsets, on the other hand, compensate for emissions after they’ve occurred – by funding projects that avoid or remove carbon elsewhere. Both support decarbonisation but play different roles – REGOs and RGGOs reduce emissions from your energy use, while offsets balance out what's left.
